Swedish furniture giant IKEA has unveiled its first chain-less bicycle, designed along its principles of being environmentally-friendly, design-centric, and low-cost.
Unlike its FOLKVÄNLIG electric bicycle, which was sold in limited quantities, the ‘SLADDA’ bicycle is catered for the masses. It boasts low maintenance features, including a sealed gear hub in the rear wheel, and a corrosion and rust-proof cogged belt that will replace the conventional metal chain of a bicycle. It is estimated to last for 15,000 kilometers.
It is constructed with a light-weight aluminum frame, double coated in lacquer guards to prevent scratches, and a height-adjustable handlebar. You can also choose between 26- or 28-inch wheels, and it comes with a modular ‘click system’ allowing riders to attach baskets, panniers, or a tow cart.
The SLADDA bicycle has won a Red Dot Design Award, and will be sold in Europe from August 2016. It aims to convert people to a more sustainable means of transport, and would be priced at approximately US$797.
