Android is mature enough that root is no longer a basic necessity, but for fans of custom ROMs and those who can’t live without in-depth tweaking, root access is still highly desirable.
Some of the hardest devices to root are carrier-locked models, but there’s little that carriers and manufacturers can do in face of highly skilled and passionate members of the Android development community.
Take the AT&T versions of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, which were both rooted by XDA member br3w3r in collaboration with princecomsy and root legend chainfire.
The root method implies flashing “engineered boot images,” a special version of the Odin tool, and knowing your way around rooting methods. It’s not newbie-friendly, in other words, but several users have successfully applied it already.
The root method was tested on the AT&T Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, but a couple of XDA members reported that it worked on the T-Mobile versions, and theoretically, it should work on other carrier versions as well.
Note that rooting your phone will disable Samsung Pay and likely trip Knox security measures.
